Monnik Beer Co., Holsopple Brewing and four others have brewed special beers that will be tapped at the event and judged, with the winner taking home a “trophy” in the form of a custom-engraved Craft Beer Throwdown Mash Paddle.
Last year’s winner was Falls City Brewing Co. with a beer called Ya’ll — a big, hearty and sweet, bourbon-barrel-aged chocolate pecan brown ale.
“For a first-time event, it was a lot of fun and a huge success last year,” Brian U’Sellis, marketing director at Falls City, said. “We had a blast.”
The brewery will seek repeat championship this year with CoCo LoCo Bestia, which U’Sellis describes as “a special one-keg variant of our imperial barrel-aged stout, Subtle Beast, aged on coconut and cocoa nibs.”
The one-off beer is an 11 percent ABV monster and will be available only at the Throwdown event.
Other competing breweries are Gravely Brewing Co., Great Flood Brewing Co. and Mile Wide Beer Co. Gravely will enter a Pineapple Debaser IPA, a version of the brewery’s New England IPA, while Holsopple will enter a Mango Milkshake IPA. Other beers will be announced soon.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the Coalition’s efforts to end youth homelessness in Louisville. The Coalition, along with 50 community partners, are striving to end youth homelessness in the city by 2020, and since last summer have seen a 50 percent reduction.
Added attractions this year include a silent auction, games, a photo booth and the opportunity to buy commemorative growlers filled with a choice of the competing beers. The breweries will also sell full pours of some of their regular offerings, food trucks also will be on site, with 10 percent of sales going back to the Coalition.
The Throwdown will be held at the Louisville Water Tower Park, 6-10 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. Advance tickets can be procured with a $20 online donation; admission at the door is $25. Attendees get taste all six of the special beers and vote for a winner. Plus, the first 500 Craft Beer Throwdown attendees will receive a commemorative pint glass.
